How to Go Inside: Leading Jewish Ritual in Prisons and Jails
Description: Join Matir Asurim for an informational session on leading Jewish ritual inside jails and prisons. This event will cover ways to connect with your local jail or prison, what to know before going inside, and how to lead ritual in a culturally responsive way with people who are incarcerated.
This event is for anyone interested in engaging with sacred space in jails and prisons — chaplains, penpals, abolitionist organizers, and anyone interested in strengthening the inside/outside relationship. No experience necessary.
Please note: due to sensitive nature of the material discussed, sessions will not be recorded. We are happy to share a written guide with relevant material upon request.
Session Dates:To maximize reaching as many people as possible, we are offering two sessions for this training: Sunday, March 22nd 1:00-2:30pm EST and Thursday, March 26th, 6-7:30pm EST. Both sessions will cover the same material.
Facilitator: Rachel Joy is a Jewish abolitionist organizer who has been facilitating Jewish weekly services and organizing holiday celebrations in jails for the past 5 years. Rachel is currently organizing with Matir Asurim as a social work intern. Rachel's work is grounded in the belief that a better world is possible and does not include jails, prisons, or detention centers.
